ALBANY—The ad hoc One Person, One Vote Coalition formed in response to the need for transparent, participatory, and equitable processes for redistricting in proposed Local Law No. “O” for 2018, to amend section 207 of the Albany County Charter and create an Albany County Commission on Reapportionment. The conduct of the decennial census is the foundational block on which redistricting is built.

Current members of the One Person, One Vote Coalition include:

Vicente Alfonso, Albany City Redistricting Commission
Elaine Frazier, Albany City Redistricting Commission
Patricia Sibilia, League of Women Voters Albany County
Ladan Alomar, Centro Civico
McKinley Johnson, The Albany African American Clergy United For Empowerment (TAAACUFE)
Rev. Dr. Charmaine Cumberbatch

We believe that equitable redistricting is critical to a representative democracy. Participatory and transparent processes are key to voter confidence and participation. In Albany County, both are necessary as we confront our past practice and embrace the challenges of a growing diversity. We are keenly interested in the adoption of an equitable redistricting plan produced through a transparent and participatory process. An accurate and complete census count of all the people who live here is the foundation block to accomplish this goal of equitable redistricting.

The One Person, One Vote Coalition will make sure all the events connected with the decennial census are available, visible and readily accessible. Albany County must ensure a complete and accurate decennial census count and pass a redistricting law that guarantees one person, one vote.
